    Fire Destroys Family Dollar Store
    FRI FEB 22
    SUBMITTED BY DAVID MILLER
    WALLACE - On Tuesday February,19,2008 at 08:45 hours, Duplin County Communications dispatched Wallace, Teachey, Rose Hill and Duplin County EMS Medic 7 to 114 East Southerland Street in Wallace for a commercial structure fire at the Family Dollar Store. Wallac Car 1 arrived and upgraded the call to a working fire with heavy smoke from the front of the store and requested Northeast, Penderlea, and Burgaw to be dispatched for manpower and ladder from Burgaw.

    Wallace FD Engine 6 arrived and placed two 2.5-inch attack lines in service to the front of the structure. When units from Teachey, Rose Hill, and Northeast arrived deck monitors were placed in service for defensive operations. After Burgaw arrived with their ladder truck a special call was placed to Coastal Carolina Concrete Pumping for a large concrete pumper.

    What amount of water can that thing pump out and what kind of connections does it have to match to the pumper?

    Re: Concrete Pumper @ Working Fire

    from the link below the picture

    "This truck is operated by a Wallace fireman and they have adapted it to be used as an aerial device if needed. We used it in Warsaw at a commercial structure fire downtown in 1997, at Carrolls Mill twice in the past few years and has been available if needed. It is set to recieve several 3″ lines or 5″ and has a discharge on the end if you need to hook a smaller wye on it. The time I remember using it was on Carrolls Mill, we had a 2.5″ x 2.5″x2.5″ wye hooked to it. It is very useful being there is no aerial device in Duplin County. Recently 2 departments around in border counties have obtained such aerial devices."

    and this i got on the net.

    Re: Concrete Pumper @ Working Fire

    We have had the number for Quandel Concrete in our run books for years for tanker backup. You would not believe how fast a concrete truck can dump water and you will not find better drivers for moving that kind of load around.

    Only draw back, you will get some aggregate in the bottom of your porta dam.

    Most recent fire that I can remember them being used was the 4 unit house fire in Foster Twp.

    Quandels has in the past filled his trucks with water at night while there was water main break in town as a precaution and from what the chief tells me they had done this in the past also during a drought.

    They are definitely a company that backs the fire service when we need it.

    All I can say is it has to have the greatest manufacturer name---SHWING

    It reminds me of the 56 boys on standby at the annual fireworks display. Standing in an inspection line formation, and in unison, giving the SCHWING to passing motorists.

    Did anyone take notice that the boom was high enough to extend over the power lines, and back down to the fire building? Solves your power line hazard problem!

    Re: Concrete Pumper @ Working Fire

    schwing concrete pumps do built fire trucks as well. You can go to there web site www.schwing.com and it should have a link to diffrent pump aplications. Most pumps in this area are 39meter pumps but they can biuld them up too 60meters (i think). Most opperators of pumps can put the boom just about anywhere, one neat boom is the Z boom,it can bend itself backwards. I was wrong on the web site go to www.wateronline.com/storefronts/schwingamerica.html and that will take you to schwing fire pump site.

    im am not by any means trying to start anything here, but they wormleysburg fire, they had truck trouble with lines. this would solve that plus, tight allys in this area, high grades like rt.850, and so much more. i wish someone around here had the funds to do it. you know how much your call volume would increase to mutual aid?!?

    In 2001, Pierce signed an exclusive agreement with Schwing to market their boom for fire service applications. Here's a link;

    From the Pierce literature:
    8-inch waterway with a flow rate of 600 gpm to 5,000 gpm
    Nozzle flow rate of 600 gpm to 4,000 gpm

    Re: Concrete Pumper @ Working Fire

    With a pump boom it does not have to go straight up and over ,for those of us in the construction industry this is a valuable tool. Someone had mentioned cost of a pump, I know 5 pump co's. in area and the least expensive was $500.000 for a 39m boom. You can get used ones but you might end up sinking more money in than if u bought new.And Greg , these booms work simalar to the piercer nozzel but with more reach & with longer reach covers more area. Plus on a high rise, boom up to 15th floor & there is you're hydrant. Just my views.

    Re: Concrete Pumper @ Working Fire

    Think about the outrigger profile on these things. Even the 90' Pierce contraption has a much greater outrigger stance than your larger Aerials in use today. 20' rear and 17' front, and if you look at the 170' behemoth it requires over 34' to set the outriggers. I don't think that if you have issues with placing an aerial in the first place due to overhead obstructions or tight streets these things would even be an option. I wouldn't want to have to put one of those things in service on some street not knowing the condition of the ground below my feet. If you've ever seen one of these trucks set up you would also realize that it isn't done in the normal fashion of the fire service, it takes time and I've never met an operator who would sacrifice a short cut for the stability of his rig especially to save a foundation.

    I wonder if our Township would buy one of these for us? If we would ask our Township Supervisors for one of these, they would probably need a few of these, , to calm down with.

    i work construction and had the opportunity to get close to one yet again today. the outriggers were 34' 6" wide. now, most developments are only 30' wide. so now what, plus whatever cars are in the way.

    224 cu yds/hr is about 750 GPM.

    Hr=60 min
    cu yds=27 cu ft
    7.48 gallons=cu feet

    but how did it handle the pressure?

    A few of the guys from our house went to NYC a few years ago visiting friends at L4/E54 when the guys from Carlstadt showed up with their truck. Without anyone knowing what was going on, they double parked it and set it up. The FDNY capt. said it best, " Are these guys here to change the bulbs in the streetlights?" Needless to say, the truck is much less impressive in person. If I find the photos from that day I'll post them.
