I know this topic comes up often but I am listening to a fire currently going on in eastern PA. Communications radioed command and indicated his first PAR check was coming up. His response was "County we don't need PAR checks, everything is defensive no one is inside."

Boy I wonder how he would feel if someone went down while walking around the back of the house. From looking at a satellite view, it appears to be in a very wooded area and from radio comm. it sounds like it is set back in a lane. I think PAR checks are equally important in a setting like this where there is a good chance of multiple hazards around the exterior. Better to be safe than sorry.

Reflective Vests

Maybe there is already a thread on this subject and if so I apologize. I have to question the laws regarding wearing the reflective vests we all had to go spend our hard earned money on. We are constantly responding to vehicle accidents and ONLY fire personnel are wearing these vests over our bunker gear which already has reflective stripes. There are almost, 99.9% of the time, police and EMS personnel on these scenes not wearing any reflective attire let alone a vest. I just wonder why this is required if only certain emergency responders are wearing them. I know you get into the whole federal funded roadway thing, but most of us don't know which are which so why not wear them on all roadways? The second part of my rant is seeing fire personnel wear these, specifically under an SCBA on a fire incident. Seems that there needs to be more training on who, when, where, why, we need to be wearing these. Just this morning we pulled up to an MVA watching a police officer directing traffic in his black uniform. Okay, stepping off the soap box and applying the bullet/taser proof suit now.

Tax-exempt status

I perused a 430 page document today that lists all of the tax-exempt organizations in Pennsylvania that will soon lose their tax-exempt status with the IRS for failure to file tax returns as required by law for the past three years. As you can imagine, there are a number of fire and emergency service organizations in the Commonwealth that have made this list.

As soon as I figure out how to post the file that I have culled from that document, I'll do so. Please check it out, as an organization you belong to may be on the list. I found one that I am a member and elected officer of on it.

PA FF charged in Arson Somerset County, PA

PSP arrested Charles Whipkey, 34, in Somerset County.

Whipkey is a member of the Confluence Volunteer Fire Department and has been charged with intentionally setting a fire to a house in Confluence Borough.

PSP stated that Whipkey set the fire Tuesday morning just before 06:00 and then responded to the fire call.

Whipkey is currently held in the Somerset County jail after failing to post a $20,000 bond.

Now that I got your attention,our department is having issues with staffing on weekends.We have talked about duty crews for some time and decided we were going to truly address this.What do other departments do about signing up duty crews?We also want to try assigning people to specific apparatus for a set period of time in groups so maintainance and truck checks are more likely to be done diligently.After say a month of being assigned to the brush truck and engine,next month your group is on the tanker and the tower.Don't take this wrong.No one is restricted to responding on certain apparatus,except at a scheduled event should a call come in.Any help negative and positive is appreciated

about the 1:40 mark in the video he starts to imply that the firefighters are behind the recent fires that have happened..

*note* this all started after the departments started questioning his budget and staffing cuts..
